Chips Quinn Reporter Fellowship Announces 2025-2026 Class
Posting: Wednesday, June 18, 2025
Journalism Funding Partners (JFP) is proud to introduce the 2025–2026 cohort of the Chips Quinn Reporter Fellowship. With help from Freedom Forum, JFP has selected 10 early-career journalists who will each receive a one-year 1:1 mentorship from seasoned newsroom leaders and Chips Quinn alumni, along with a $10,000 stipend.
The fellowship honors the legacy of the late John C. “Chips” Quinn Jr., who championed diversity in American newsrooms. Since its beginnings in 1991, the program has supported more than 1,400 journalists, evolving from internship placements to a mentorship model focused on advancing career power skills—communication, leadership, collaboration and personal and professional development.
Here are this year’s reporters:
Susan Barnett: Co-founder of Tucson Spotlight
Fernando Cervantes: National Trending News Reporter for USA TODAY.
Sydnee Chapman: Investigative Reporter for The Utah Investigative Journalism Project as well as a freelancer.
Tamia Fowlkes: Public Investigator for The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Krys'tal Griffin: Community Issues & Trending Reporter at The News Journal.
Tayeba Hussein: Breaking News Reporter for the Fort Myers News-Press/Naples Daily News at the USA TODAY network
Palak Jayswal: Culture & Music Reporter for the Salt Lake Tribune.
Angelica Perez: Future Eastside Reporter for Tulsa Local News Initiative
Alyssa Ramos: Digital Producer for WLRN News.
Samantha Verrelli: Roanoke Valley Reporter for Cardinal News
Throughout their fellowship year, each of them will be matched with a dedicated mentor, some of whom are alum. Fellows are encouraged to engage with one another and the broader Chips Quinn network virtually and in their local communities.
Stay tuned for updates and stories from our reporters as they begin this exciting phase of their careers. Consider donating to the program and follow us on our website and social media channels to support and celebrate the next generation of journalists.
